We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic, and motivated youth worker based in Hamilton to join our team and deliver the Ethnic Youth Explorer programme to young ethnic people between 12 and 24. The programme provides a safe space for isolated ethnic youth to enhance their well-being by developing friendships, learning new skills, strengthening their identity, and contributing to the community. Youth engagement and development activities take place monthly, with an additional monthly online session for meet-and-greets.

The youth worker will be responsible for planning, delivering, and reporting the youth-led designed activities within the programme. The role also involves supporting young people and referring them to relevant services when needed.

Location: Hamilton

Salary: $27.80 to $30 per hour (Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role)

Reporting To: Community Development Lead

Key responsibilities:

  • Working with Shama’s community development lead and the young people to design the activities for youth.
  • Promoting the programme in different ethnic communities and communicating with young people to encourage participation and involvement.
  • Coordinating and delivering the youth programme safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Working as Shama’s privacy officer to ensure the information is managed according to privacy laws and organisational standards.
  • Preparing and submitting monthly report and project reports on time
  • Referring clients to appropriate community services if needed, to help them achieve their goals.
  • Networking and maintaining good relations with other service providers and stakeholders.

Key requirements:

  • Understands the experience of ethnic youth from a range of backgrounds living in New Zealand.
  • Has well developed written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Has the necessary immigration status and documentation to work in New Zealand.
  • Has computer skills, and actively uses social media.
  • The ability to speak 1 or 2 ethnic languages will be an advantage.
  • Full NZ drivers Licence will be an advantage.
