Position Title: Support Worker
Location: Tauranga (Hybrid – combination of remote and on-site work)
Position Term: Fixed-term (initially 12 months, with potential extension)
Hours: Part-time (20 hours/week), with potential to increase over time
Salary: $28.95 to $31.00 per hour (aligned with social workers’ pay spine)
About Shama Ethnic Women’s Trust:
Shama Ethnic Women’s Trust (commonly known as Shama) is a charitable trust formed in 2002 after the identification of a gap in available services for ethnic women and children that are run by ethnic women. Shama aims to support the development of a truly multicultural New Zealand where all women from ethnic* minorities would be fully integrated into New Zealand society, to live lives of dignity, free from fear of violence and discrimination, and to be recognised as valuable contributors to their local communities.
About the Role:
We are seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, and motivated Support Worker to join our team and deliver culturally appropriate services to ethnic women and their families.
The role involves:
● Providing high-quality support services to clients
● Working within a team environment and responding to crisis situations
● Supporting community clients and peer workers
● Networking with agencies and community groups
● Building support networks for ethnic women
Identifying gaps in information and referring clients to programmes that meet their needs
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Social Work Practice Lead, your responsibilities will include:
● Implementing Shama’s support plans
● Advocating for clients
● Referring clients to relevant community services to help achieve their goals
● Maintaining accurate and timely records in the client database
● Networking and maintaining positive relationships with service providers and stakeholders
Key Skills and Requirements:
● Relevant qualification or experience in a related field
● Understanding of the experiences of ethnic women from diverse backgrounds living in New Zealand
● Appropriate immigration status and documentation to work in New Zealand
● Strong understanding of and respect for cultural differences
● Experience working with people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds
● Computer literacy
● Full New Zealand driver licence
● Ability to obtain a clean New Zealand Police check
Desirable Skills:
● Experience working with ethnic communities
● Ability to speak more than one language
