Safety Programmes and Strengthening Safety

If you are experiencing family violence, abuse, controlling behaviour, or concerns about your safety or the safety of your children, Shama can provide support in a way that is culturally responsive, confidential, and respectful.

We understand that ethnic women and families may face additional challenges such as language barriers, isolation, immigration concerns, financial dependence, cultural expectations, and limited support networks. Our team works alongside you to understand your situation, identify your strengths, and support you to make informed decisions about your safety and wellbeing.

We can help you to:

  • Understand family violence and its impacts on you and your whānau.
  • Explore options and make decisions that feel right for you.
  • Develop practical strategies to increase safety.
  • Build confidence and connect with support services and community resources.
  • Strengthen healthy relationships and communication skills.
  • Support the wellbeing of children affected by family violence.

Support may be provided through individual sessions, group programmes, safety planning, advocacy, and referrals to other services when needed. Interpreters can be arranged to ensure language is not a barrier to accessing support.

Our Safety Programmes and Strengthening Safety services are funded by the Ministry of Justice and are available to eligible participants through court referrals and other referral pathways.
