The ALAC Inc team (Aotearoa Latin American Community Inc) is a Latin American organisation that supports Latin American migrants and refugees in their resettlement process in Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2021 we partnered with them to support the work that they were already doing preventing family and sexual violence in the Latin American communities.
The work with ALAC started with the prevention workshop with ALAC staff members joining from different regions across Aotearoa: Auckland, Wellington, and Hamilton. After the workshop which we delivered in 3 online sessions, the group decided to create two educational videos focusing on consent: “No means No” and “The lack of a no doesn’t mean yes”. The team in Auckland led the initiative. They invited community leaders to perform as actors in the two videos. Our team gave feedback to both the script and the production and for instance recommended adding English subtitles to the videos to make them available to non-Spanish-speaking communities.
These videos are a sexual violence preventoon tools created by Latin Americans for Latin Americans. They reflect on aspects of consent that the group perceived are not very clear for Latin Americans, for instance, the idea that if a person doesn’t say no there is consent. The videos utilise familiar faces and community leaders to create a sense of familiarity and trust with the audience. They also reflect a culturally appropriate and community approach towards sexual violence prevention, that can also be used by other communities ethnic and non-ethnic to reflect in this topic.
