In 2020, Shama partnered with a group of 20 ethnic women from Women2Women, a grassroots initiative of 100 ethnic women and supported by the Ministry of Ethnic Communities in Christchurch. We supported this group to develop 2 prevention of sexual violence projects: a poster campaign to keep children safe from sexual harm for ethnic parents, and an animation video clip to keep adolescents safe from sexual harm.
The animation project was led by a multicultural group of young girls. They identified the need to address the risks of sexual violence associated with the increased use of phones and social media among adolescents. Through their discussions, the group decided to create an animated video, as they felt it was a fun and effective way to engage young people.
The video, created by a young ethnic animator, features a stick figure and tells the story of an ethnic adolescent who is asked to share a naked photo by someone online. It explores the different choices the adolescent can make and the possible consequences of sharing such a photo. The aim is to help ethnic adolescents reflect on the dangers of sharing explicit content while also providing information about where to seek help and who to talk to if they find themselves in a similar situation.
