Mituakiri was a bilingual Latin American online platform that supported Latin American newcomers settling in Aotearoa. It helped individuals navigate everyday needs such as legal rights, healthcare, education, employment and more. In 2021, the two women who created the website decided to engage in the Shama prevention of sexual violence program. They thought that they could use the platform regularly used by more than 1200 people to disseminate educational information about this topic.
At the initial Shama’s prevention workshop, the Mituakiri team began exploring their own community initiative. They launched an online survey for Spanish-speaking communities in Aotearoa, asking what should be prioritised in conversations about sexual violence prevention. The results highlighted a strong need to focus on consent and healthy relationships.
In response, the group created two animated videos- one on consent and the other on healthy relationships, specifically designed for the Latin American, Spanish-speaking community. The videos were originally produced in Spanish and later subtitled in English to make them accessible to a wider audience. They explore what consent is, who should ask for it, when it should be asked, and how we can ask for it.
The videos can be watched in the following links:

Although Mituakiri as a website is no longer operating, the videos are still available and and can help support the conversations on how to prevent sexual violence not only within the Latin American communities but within other ethnic communities in Aotearoa and other settings.
