Healthy Relationships

This programme supports ethnic young people to build healthy relationships with themselves, their peers, their families, and their communities. It was developed in response to calls from parents, caregivers, and community leaders for a programme that reflects the realities, values, and strengths of ethnic communities.

Healthy relationships are not only about romantic relationships. For ethnic young people, they also include friendships, family relationships, cultural expectations, identity, and belonging. This programme takes a holistic approach, recognising the importance of strong community networks in reducing isolation and supporting wellbeing.

Connections101 is a 10-session programme developed with input from ethnic young people, parents, and caregivers. Sessions are interactive and strengths-based, creating space for reflection, discussion, and skill-building in a culturally safe environment.

Topics include:

  • Understanding healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Friendships, peer support, and communication
  • Family relationships and navigating expectations
  • Identity, culture, gender, and consent
  • Managing conflict and building resilience
  • Community belonging and support

The programme helps young people develop self-awareness, communication skills, and practical tools to navigate relationships confidently and safely, while celebrating their cultural identities and values.

Connections101 is delivered in Tauranga and Hamilton.
