Safe night. Preventing sexual harm in our latino community

Reduction, prevention and mitigation of the abusive behaviours  against adult Latina women in the nightclubs in New Zealand.

In 2023, the Latin American women’s group De Mujer a Mujer, formed by four women from Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga, developed a project Safe night. Preventing sexual harm in our latino community. The purpose of the project was to reduce, prevent and mitigate abusive behaviours against adult Latina women in the nightclubs in New Zealand. The group came up with the idea after attending a prevention workshop delivered by Shama and reflecting on cases of sexual abuse they were aware of, as well as the normalization of such behavior within the context of Latin American parties.

The project started with a poster campaign “A Shot in the Sky” to raise awareness and prevent sexual abuse at Latin American the Latin parties in these cities. The posters were designed to be displayed on the inside of women’s bathroom doors, so that women could learn how to discreetly ask for support from DJs and staff at parties by requesting “A shot in the sky.”

To socialise the campaign and gather feedback, they held a virtual workshop with DJs and party managers, emphasising the role of event organisers in creating safer spaces. Together, they also developed a strategy for women to discreetly ask bartenders for help if they felt unsafe at nightclubs.

In 2024, Shama supported the group in expanding their campaign. As part of this work, De Mujer a Mujer produced a video on consent, promoting the message of respect for Latin American women in party settings. The video was launched during an online event with DJs and venue managers and received strong traction on social media. With the support of influencer actors, it reached 1.6K views in just one day. The idea of this video was to reach national audience so the campaign could expand to other cities across Aotearoa.
