Keeping Children Safe From Sexual Harm in Arabic and from an Islamic perspective

In 2021, a group of 12 Muslim women -mothers and their daughters- based in Hamilton decided to get involved in the efforts that Shama had started to prevent family and sexual violence in the ethnic communites of Aotearoa. The partnership Shama- Yamina group started with an initial prevention workshop organised by Shama. After the workshop, Shama recognized the potential to support two separate projects: one led by the mothers and another by the daughters.

Motivated by the desire to protect their children, the group of mothers developed a booklet in Arabic focused on preventing child sexual abuse. Their goal was to provide culturally appropriate and accessible information for Arabic-speaking parents, offering guidance rooted in both faith and safety. The 20-page booklet included practical guidance and interactive activities to support Arab parents to learn the content and give them ideas on how to apply it within their families. The booklet was successfully piloted with a group of 20 Muslim women in Hamilton.
